Reviews of the latest songs from Katy Perry, Rick Ross, and more

Katy Perry ”Wide Awake”

Perry has constructed such a happy-go-lucky persona that when she sings about ”castles crumbling” and ”falling from cloud nine,” it feels like the California gurl could use a dose of Zoloft in her cupcake frosting. Still, a nifty ambient synth makes the whole lament go down easy. BGrady Smith

Rick Ross feat. Usher ”Touch ‘N You”

Aided by Usher’s velvet vocals and a beat that ripples like scented candle wax, the king-size Miami rapper promises his favorite lady some heavyweight seduction. That includes an endless supply of pink champagne, rose petals on the bed, and a jungle-cat metaphor not fit to print. BKyle Anderson

Sean Kingston feat. T.I. ”Back 2 Life (Live It Up)”

Yes, Kingston (right) and his guest expertly boast about their eternal resurrection while surfing a gush of fist-pumping drums. But ”Back 2 Life” mostly makes a case for the undying greatness of its namesake 1989 Soul II Soul jam, which provides the ultra-melodic backbone for an otherwise pedestrian party-starter.
