The trailer for Alex Cross, the James Patterson adaptation in which Tyler Perry assumes the titular detective role made famous by Morgan Freeman (Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider) has arrived. Watch it below. It also features Lost‘s Matthew Fox as the sadistic killer Cross is chasing.

Thoughts? While I think we should all give Perry more than a two-minute chance to prove he’s an action star, I can’t help but watch this and imagine Idris Elba (The Wire, Prometheus) on Fox’s tail. Elba was set to star in the reboot when David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, Pitch Black), was the director, but when QED International became a producer, Perry was cast and director Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious and xXx) took over the helm. As Bill Block, CEO of QED International (District 9), told EW last year, “When we came on, we looked at it freshly, and just built it from the bottom up. Sure, Idris is a great actor; Tyler Perry is a phenomenon. Tyler Perry is one of the most significant entertainers in all of media. He is a huge cross-media talent and presence — and he’s a terrific actor whose range is going to be shown here…. We went to him. If you can get Tyler Perry or Will Smith, you try.”
