Emily Maynard's 'Bachelorette' Style

When it comes to style, this Bachelorette has only one rule — no flats. ''She said, 'I don't care if I'm just getting up to go to the bathroom in the morning, I always wear heels,''' says Cary Fetman, stylist for the ABC hit airing Mondays at 8 p.m. (He declines to put a price on Maynard's onscreen wardrobe but confirms that his is the largest clothing budget on reality TV.) The two are certainly in sync stylewise. ''You take me, a [man] who never saw a sequin he didn't like, and her, a Southern girl who loves anything that sparkles, and it's so much fun,'' he says. ''It's like having my own Barbie doll.''

The Naked Dress

The frock Maynard wore to the first rose ceremony wasn’t her first choice. ”She wanted to wear a big romantic gown, but I told her that it was important that she wear something the guys would see and think, ‘Whoa!”’ Fetman says. ”This [Jean Fares] gown was hot. Every time one of the guys walked in, you could see him eye her up and down. You have to know the difference between a dress that women will think is sexy and a dress that men will think is sexy.”

The Rose Gown

”I used to have to call designers to ask if I could borrow gowns, but once they knew Emily was [the new Bachelorette], they started contacting me. She had such a great look on The Bachelor, they thought, ‘This is the perfect girl to wear our clothes,”’ says Fetman of his ability to score samples like this $14,500 Jean Fares dress. ”This one had layers and layers of fabric that looked like a rose turned upside down. The bodice was so tight and it had a hoop skirt, but Emily can work a gown like no other.”

Day Dressing

”Except for the rose ceremonies or a big date, Emily does her own hair and makeup. She has amazing taste [in clothes], so I was just the person who brought things in for her to try on,” says Fetman, who helped Maynard pull together 70 complete outfits in just two days before the show began filming. ”I told her, ‘I’m here to help you, but I don’t want to change you. I like you the way you are, and obviously the audience does too.”’

Matching Miss Piggy

Hours before Maynard took the stage to cohost a variety-show benefit with the Muppets, Fetman received an odd request. ”I got an email asking for Emily to wear something that would coordinate with Miss Piggy’s outfit,” he says with a laugh. ”I’m not sure whether it came from the Bachelorette producers or Miss Piggy’s team, but there I was looking through racks of clothing trying to match Emily’s dress with a puppet pig’s!”

The Grammy Gown

It was love at first sight when Fetman laid eyes on this stunning sequin Gomez-Gracia gown, but there was one problem — Carrie Underwood had worn it to the Grammy Awards a few months earlier. ”I thought to myself, ‘If Carrie Underwood isn’t going to care, why should I?”’ he says. ”The beauty was, because there was some stretch to it, I didn’t have to tailor it. It fit Emily just as perfectly as it fit Carrie.”
