“Double-0 seven reporting for duty.”
So says our favorite British action hero after he’s returned from the dead. The new trailer for Skyfall, the latest installment of the Bond franchise starring Daniel Craig, finally lets us in on the goods. There’s M typing up an obituary for Bond after a mission gone wrong in Turkey. “What do you say about a man like that,” she wonders. Bond was shot off the top of a speeding train by a sniper, falling lifelessly off a bridge and into the water Jason Bourne-like.
“Where the hell have you been?” M asks, after Bond makes his way back to the land of the living.
Watch two versions of the trailer below, which both introduce Bond’s new [Q]uartermaster, two potentially dangerous ladies, and a blond baddie played by Javier Bardem.
I couldn’t help but see similarities between Bond’s new arc and The Dark Knight Rises… RISE = RESURRECTION. Bardem’s villain, too, seems to share some of Bond’s background DNA, and is described with almost Bane-ian reverence:
“How much do you know about fear?”
“All there is,” replies Bond.
“Not like this. Not like him.”
“So old fashioned,” says Bardem’s baddie, referring to Bond’s duties of chasing spies. But this clip is old-fashioned in the best sense, seemingly interweaving the old with the new. Bravo, Sam Mendes. Let the games begin!
