It’s just Katie!

Katic Couric’s new syndicated talk show, Katie, debuted today, and while Couric herself was warm and on-point, her guests left something to be desired. Check out below for our thoughts on the guests and the future.

The Beginning: Couric kicked off her show in a taped little segment where she was in bed awaking from a “dream” that served to catch up viewers on her previous endeavors: The Today show, hosting the CBS evening news, etc. — nothing anyone checking out Katie wouldn’t have already known. In a gag, Matt Lauer woke up next to her and asked her, “Are you ready for this day?” Cue “This Day,” her catchy theme song performed by Sheryl Crow.

The Guests: Katie sat down with both Jessica Simpson and Crow for her first hour. After chatting with Simpson about losing her baby weight and her new partnership with Weight Watchers, Couric asked her about tabloid culture and the “Body after Baby” phenomenon — questions Simpson did not really answer. Likewise with Crow, Couric tried to get into her thoughts about Lance Armstrong’s recent struggles. But Crow only said she didn’t know anything and wished him the best. Oprah’s Confessional Couch this is not.

The Future: Couric assured viewers that the format for Katie will feature a mix of real-life (read: hard news) people as well as celebrities. She’s booked Amanda Knox’s ex-boyfriend for next week, and on the celebrity front, she’s got Heidi Klum and Jennifer Lopez  stopping by as well. Aspiring to “the best version of you” was the theme of the hour – and the show. Only time will tell if the show is the best version  — or use of — Katie Couric.

Update: An earlier version of this post said that Knox’s ex-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, would be on the show later this week. He’ll be on next Tuesday.
