NBC’s behind-the-scenes Broadway drama Smash will come out on DVD January 8, 2013 — just in time to catch up with Karen, Ivy, Julia, and Tom before they return for the mid-season show’s revamped sophomore effort. The DVD version will also feature a gag reel, a behind-the-scenes feature with songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, and additional deleted and extended scenes from the first season.

Expect some big changes for season 2, including some names that are on the DVD but won’t be back for the new season. Dev (Raza Jaffrey) and Ellis (Jaime Cepero) are both out and the show is preparing to add a bevy of names, including Jesse L. Martin, Nikki Blonsky, and Daniel Sunjata. Smash was held until mid-season by the network due to some creative challenges following season 1 and will return to NBC’s primetime lineup with new showrunner Josh Safran (Gossip Girl) at the helm in January.
