In a way, Captain America has a little in common with Austin Powers. Both of them were international men of mystery from a bygone era who once pined for a stunning brunette. Then, after they’re both defrosted in the present day, their lives and relationships are complicated because the object of their love has aged while they remain in pristine health.
After Captain America, Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter was doomed to flashback scenes in subsequent sequels once it was decided to bring Cap into the 21st century. So Marvel is currently searching for the hero’s next main squeeze. According to Deadline, five actresses are in the running: Emelia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey), Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four), Imogen Poots (Fright Night), and Community’s Alison Brie. The first four ladies are three Brits and an Aussie, keeping with the notion that Steve Rogers has a soft spot for clipped accents; and Brie is a Californian who just so happens to work on the same sitcom as Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors, Joe and Anthony Russo.
Since I’ve always been jealous of Downton Abbey’s lucky Irish chauffeur, my heart might be pulling for Jessica Brown Findlay to land the part. (And if Marvel were to follow Austin Powers’ blueprint even further by making the new female character a Carter offspring, audiences can easily imagine Findlay and Atwell sharing the same gene pool.)
