It’s one of the most iconic moments on screen — especially for those of us who came to expect our own boyfriends to be as smitten and thoughtful as Say Anything‘s Lloyd Dobler. So to see John Cusack hand a boombox (alas, he doesn’t hold it above his head!) to Peter Gabriel during a concert in Los Angeles over the weekend, right before Gabriel dove into “In Your Eyes” — which millions of moviegoers now associate with director Cameron Crowe famous scene — was quite a treat.

Cusack hasn’t always been comfortable playing into that magical movie moment. In a 2009 MTV interview, Cusack refused to hold up a paper boombox, forcing 2012 co-star Amanda Peet to partake to diffuse the awkwardness.

Happily, Cusack seems to be coming around.  After his onstage appearance, Crowe (who was in the audience) tweeted, “Peter Gabriel and John Cusack on stage together at the Hollywood Bowl tonight. Won’t forget that… ever,”  and Cusack responded, “If I were u I would follow @CameronCrowe and occasionally suggest we work together again — was so happy to see him last night at gabriel.”
