One Direction gets 3-D concert movie directed by... Morgan Spurlock?

Wait, what?

Academy Award-nominated documentarian Morgan Spurlock – best known for taking aim at McDonald’s with Super Size Me – will direct a 3-D concert film starring One Direction, the British boy band that’s stolen tweenage hearts around the world. According to a press release, the film will be released Labor Day weekend 2013 – the perfect pre-school year pick-me-up.

“This is an incredible opportunity and an amazing moment in time for the band,” Spurlock said in a statement. “To capture this journey and share it with audiences around the world will be an epic undertaking that I am proud to be a part of.”

Simon Cowell, who engineered the band’s formation on the British version of The X Factor, echoed the director’s words: “I’m delighted we’re making this film and Morgan is the perfect person to give that access-all-areas, behind-the-scenes look into what it’s like to be One Direction today. What the band have achieved is incredible, they and their fans have made history around the world – this is for them.”

Spurlock’s last documentary was Mansome, a cheeky film about male grooming. The One Direction movie will mark his first foray into musical filmmaking.
