Type “Festivus” and Seinfeld fans receive an unexpected treat: The undecorated aluminum Festivus pole.
The Easter Egg is Google’s tribute to the alternative holiday tradition inspired by a 1997 episode of the NBC comedy classic, where George Costanza’s disgruntled father tells how he created Festivus to replace over-commercialized Christmas. “A Festivus for the rest of us” includes traditions such as the “Airing of Grievances,” where each person at the event tells the others all the ways they’ve disappointed them over the past year, and “Feats of Strength,” where the head of household challenges another family member to a wrestling match.
The secular mock-holiday is based on Seinfeld writer Daniel O’Keefe’s own family tradition that extends back to 1966 (as detailed in his book, The Real Festivus).
A Google spokesperson contacted by EW.com said: “If you’re not big on the holidays, don’t forget there’s a Festivus for the rest of us. No tinsel, just a sturdy pole. Good luck if you’re chosen for the Feats of Strength.”
