It’s good day for sci-fi shows on The CW: Freshman action-drama Arrow, mid-run hit The Vampire Diaries and veteran series Supernatural have just received early pickups for next season.
All will return this fall.
“We said last year that one of our goals was to establish building blocks to grow on, and now with our new hit Arrow and fan favorite Supernatural on Wednesday night, and the continued success of The Vampire Diaries on Thursday, we’ve been able to do that,” said CW president Mark Pedowitz. “Not only do [all three] perform well on-air, they’re also extremely successful for us both digitally and socially. I’m thrilled to have all three shows returning to our schedule next season.”
This will give a second season to Arrow, a fifth to Vampire Diaries (which is also nursing a spinoff pilot this season, The Originals) and a ninth for the Winchester brothers of Supernatural. All three shows were expected to return and represent easy decisions for the network. The choices get tougher from here, with the network probably reserving several of its more difficult calls until after its had a chance to see its pilots.
