We gave it an B+

Russell dappled her first novel, Swamplandia!, with seemingly supernatural elements that pulled the reader wondrously along like marsh lights. Her new book of short stories, Vampires in the Lemon Grove, finds the author pushing even further into the numinous, surrounding each tale with the sticky miasma of the unreal and at times even venturing into the spooky woods of straight-out horror. The result is a little inconsistent — some stories, such as one about a young pioneer boy encountering a tableau of desiccated evil in the droughted West, just read like a more literate version of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. But many of the others, including the mournful title tale, manage to skillfully tie together their emotional and paranormal strands into a beautiful black bow. B+
