From beading to crystals and a flurry of sequins, the stars were in full glitter mode at Sunday night’s Oscars, but Adele was one of the few celebrities to give us a double dose of shine.

On the red carpet, the “Skyfall” singer wore a beaded Jenny Packham gown, but she upped the sparkle factor even more when it came time for her performance, changing into a Burberry dress, silver Christian Louboutin ‘Bibi’ platform pumps and diamond earrings from Van Cleef and Arpels.

“My dress weighs 15 kilos [33 pounds]. It’s so heavy,” the nominee – who went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Song – told Kristen Chenoweth. “So when you take a breath to do a big note, it’s a bit difficult.”

Why did she choose such a weighty dress?

During rehearsals, the singer tested three options to see which one would help her stand out against the Swarovski crystal curtain and swirling smoke. Though her red carpet dress was in the running, it was the Burberry frock, covered in degradé embroidered crystals, that won out. (She did change back into her Jenny Packham just in time to return to the stage to pick up her Oscar.)

Before the show, Adele admitted that, as long as it helped her turn in a memorable first Oscars performance, she was happy to suffer in the name of fashion. Not to mention the fact that the experience gave her the feeling that, sartorially speaking, she had formed a bond with two of her music industry idols.

“I heard Barbra Streisand did it back in the day with a dress that weighed 50 pounds and she danced as well,” she told Chenoweth. “I feel like Beyoncé.”
