Here’s some genuinely surprising news: Dane Cook has been cast as the voice of lead character Dusty, a plane, in Disney’s Planes, a 3D action comedy that follows “Dusty’s dream of competing as a high-flying air racer—and his decidedly unfortunate fear of heights.” It’s based in the same world as Cars and Cars 2 and is being released Aug. 9.
Planes, directed by Klay Hall, was originally slated for a spring 2013 direct-to-DVD release, but after the release of Cars 2, Disney decided to give Planes a theater take off.
Cook was set to appear on a midseason comedy for NBC this season, but that show was cancelled before it aired. One of his most recent famous appearances was on Louie in 2011. He played himself having an awkward conversation about joke stealing with Louis C.K.
