The new horror film Come Out and Play is executive-produced by actors Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal and concerns a couple who visit a Mexican island where children have killed many of the adults. But the most bizarre aspect of the movie, which starts its platform release March 22 and is available on VOD, is the identity of its director, who goes by ”Makinov” and refuses to reveal his face or real name.

According to his official biography, Makinov was born in Belarus and adopted his new identity following a near-death experience. At last year’s Toronto Film Festival, Makinov appeared in a subtitled video ”manifesto” that declared, ”Cinema should teach us about pain.” In an email interview, the director told EW that ”anonymity is the only way you can be free in this era.”

So…was the film really directed by García Bernal or Luna, and is this just a publicity stunt? Luna insists Makinov is real: ”He exists. We had to pay a director!” His assertion is backed up by Play star Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Lola Versus), who says Makinov spoke Russian during the shoot and always wore a mask — even when the pair went octopus fishing. Luna is quick to praise Play‘s director — ”His spirit makes the film what it is” — but he doesn’t mince words: ”He is a crazy bastard.”
