A farewell to the 'Harry Potter' star

Richard Griffiths (1947-2013)

Multifaceted British actor Richard Griffiths, who died March 28 at age 65 of complications following heart surgery, was perhaps best known for playing two very different uncles: the flamboyantly gay Uncle Monty in the cult comedy Withnail and I, and, of course, Harry Potter’s cruel Muggle caretaker Vernon Dursley. Griffiths also won a 2006 Tony award for the acclaimed play The History Boys and reunited with Harry Potter costar Daniel Radcliffe for the young actor’s 2008 Broadway debut in Equus. ”Any room he walked into was made twice as funny and twice as clever just by his presence,” Radcliffe tells EW in a statement. ”I am proud to say I knew him.”
