And Candice Glover delivered one (maybe even two) of the absolute best!
Lazaro Arbos somehow landed in the Top 3 last week, but after two abysmal songburps from him tonight, can anyone vote for him with a straight face?
He’d miraculously memorized the words to the Carpenters’ “(They Long To Be) Close To You,” but enunciated horribly, sang off-pitch, and couldn’t keep up with key changes. Randy Jackson, surprisingly not won over by Lazaro’s extremely loud jacket, suggested this had been the worst performance on Idol ever.
Robbie Williams’ “Angels” was slightly better, but the judges strained to find something to say. Nicki Minaj refused to comment. Randy delivered this stunning bulletin from the Dept. of the Obvious: “It’s a girls’ race right now for me.” Even Mariah struggled to say something nice, ramble-wondering whether Lazaro’s second try was “more in the direction…of a performance…that would maybe be…preferable?”
Absurd! It’s just embarrassing at this point. Can Idol really be happy with this nonsense?
The Top 6 sang twice – something from the Bacharach/David catalog and a song they wish they’d written – on Wednesday’s performance show.
