EW has confirmed that Ashley Judd has joined the cast of Divergent, the big-screen adaptation of Veronica Roth’s dystopian YA bestseller. Judd — who recently abandoned her bid for one of Kentucky’s U.S. Senate seats — will play Natalie Prior, the mother of Divergent‘s heroine Tris (Shailene Woodley). (THR first exclusively reported this news.)

Production began this week in Chicago, with Aaron Eckhart reportedly playing Judd’s onscreen husband Andrew and Ansel Elgort (who makes his big-screen debut in Carrie this October) confirmed to play son Caleb.

Neil Burger (Limitless, The Illusionist) is directing, with a script by Games of Thrones‘ Vanessa Taylor. For more on the cast, check out our “Who’s Who?” gallery.

Divergent is scheduled to open March 21, 2014.
