We all know reality television has a reputation for having a few um, scripted elements, but something tells us the icicles on the eyelashes of the people featured on National Geographic’s Life Below Zero aren’t special effects.

On the show, premiering May 19 at 10 p.m. ET, we’ll meet a group of people who survive off the grid in the wilderness of Alaska and learn about the unique challenges they face. One man, who appears in the trailer, will “hunt actively until 20-below.” “Between 40- and 50-below, it’s an emergency,” he says.
