'NCIS' Shocker! What's next for Tony And Ziva?

After the tantalizingly romantic Ziva-Tony moment — and that car wreck! — in the hit drama's April 23 episode, star Cote de Pablo and exec producer Gary Glasberg answer our burning questions.

? HOW DOES THE EPISODE SET THINGS UP FOR NCIS’ MAY 14 FINALE?

The action was a continuation of the memorable Jan. 15 outing — one of NCIS’ most watched hours — which focused on the murder of Ziva’s (de Pablo) dad, Eli (Michael Nouri). This time around, Ziva and Tony (Michael Weatherly) traveled to Berlin to hunt for Eli’s killer. ”She’s definitely a strong person and she’s got a one-track mind right now — which is find Dad’s killer,” explains de Pablo. ”And she gets to go with her best friend/romantic partner — question mark? — into this mission. Tony can be a goof and at times a bit unprofessional, but when it comes down to it, he’s very good at his job.”

? WHY INCLUDE ANOTHER TEASE — A ROMANTIC DANCE — BETWEEN TONY AND ZIVA?

The producers wanted the characters to connect on a deeper level — though ”Tiva” shippers shouldn’t read too much into the pair’s dreamy gaze. ”This is one of the sweetest moments we’ll see, because then things get messy again — as things do between these two characters,” de Pablo hints. ”They get really nice and mushy, and then they get really messed up.”

? WHY DON’T TONY AND ZIVA JUST KISS ALREADY?

Unfortunately for fans, the writers are in no hurry to get to the much-anticipated lip-lock between the popular couple. ”Looking back at fantastic TV shows from Moonlighting to Northern Exposure, it’s better to dole this out in little bits and pieces and let people savor it,” Glasberg explains. ”We will get there. For now, though, I’m very happy with the way it’s unfolding.”

? DO YOU WORRY ABOUT ALIENATING TIVA FANS?

”At a certain point, that has to be explored or let go,” de Pablo admits. ”I [wouldn’t] have the willpower to sustain a flirtatiousness or anger for that long without reaching some level of conclusion, or without having a passionate kiss or saying, ‘That wasn’t so good’ — something that would at least bring some ease, or an incredible level of pain.”

? THE EPISODE ENDS WITH THE DUO IN A CAR CRASH. IS ONE HALF OF TIVA TOAST?

Common sense says Hell no!, but Glasberg isn’t spilling. ”Everyone was surprised that I killed off Leon Vance’s wife and Ziva’s dad. People feel like I’m the grim reaper! I certainly don’t mind pushing the boundaries dramatically as we head toward the season finale.”

? WHAT ELSE CAN FANS EXPECT BEFORE THE SEASON ENDER?

”After this episode, the next three that follow are connected to one another in an arc that carries through to the end of the season and into the beginning of the next,” Glasberg says. ”It will be action-packed.” Will they finally catch the killer of Jackie Vance and Eli? ”What we’ve seen up to now is just the tip of the iceberg,” teases de Pablo. ”We don’t get complete closure, and I don’t know if closure really happens. I’ll leave it at that.”
