This week marked the end of the ride for one DWTS contestant, after a shaky Latin Night performance and a five from one of the judges.
Andy Dick, whose enthusiasm and determination to improve each week made him a quick favorite with many viewers, said goodbye to his fellow dancing friends of season 16 tonight.
The entire cast was sad to see him go. Val Chmerkovskiy said he brought a certain spirit to the show, Mark Ballas said he’d miss his energy, and Karina Smirnoff said she would miss how sweet both Andy and his partner Sharna Burgess were.
Dick said he was not surprised about their elimination, stating that the odds were always against them. He said he would not miss being in rehearsals every day, but he would miss “the weekly feeling of accomplishment.”
Despite knowing the elimination was nigh, Andy and Sharna both expressed surprise at the low score they received from Carrie Ann last night.
“Carrie Ann responded the most to us at first and was the harshest in the end,” Andy lamented. “I think that five hurt us. I think she was giving us a five in comparison to the other dancers.”
Dick said he learned a lot about overcoming the mental obstacles he encountered while dancing.
“This is just so not what I do,” Andy laughed. “To stay this long doing something that is not me is weird.”
Every week, Dick said, they just wanted one more week. Sharna said his progress was inspiring not just as a dancer but as an individual.
“The person he was nine weeks ago…. He learned not just the rumba and the cha cha but overcame so many personal struggles.”
Now that he has a little more free time, Dick will be “diving into family,” and promised to be back every week in the front row to cheer on his friends.
