Bunker Hill

Genre: History; Author: Nathaniel Philbrick; Publisher: Viking Adult

Almost everyone can dredge up a few facts about Bunker Hill, the pivotal early battle of the Revolutionary War. It was a Pyrrhic victory for the British, who lost a hefty percentage of their officers and saw the inexperienced colonial troops get a much-needed shot of confidence. Philbrick’s account, in Bunker Hill, lacks the same magic he brought to 2000’s In the Heart of the Sea, his saga of 19th-century whaling, but he still fashions the narrative with real skill. Though you know the ending, you whip through the pages, rooting for the ragtag band of patriots. B+
