Thus begins Reese Witherspoon’s Apology Tour ’13. Last week, the Oscar-winning actress canceled appearances on both Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and Good Morning America in the wake of her arrest for disorderly conduct on April 19. But now that April’s given way to May, Witherspoon is apparently ready to talk about her brush with the Atlanta Department of Corrections — and perhaps also about Mud, the movie she was getting ready to promote before she got cuffed in the first place.

Talk of the film naturally took a back seat to talk of her arrest when Witherspoon stopped by Good Morning America earlier today. “We went out to dinner in Atlanta and we had one too many glasses of wine,” she explained, referring to herself and her husband, Jim Toth, whose own DUI arrest inspired the outburst that would get Witherspoon charged with disorderly conduct. “We thought we were fine to drive and we absolutely were not. We know better and we shouldn’t have done that.”

And the contrition didn’t stop there. Witherspoon recalled how she “panicked” when she saw a police officer writing up Toth — “I told him I was pregnant. I’m not pregnant. I said all kinds of crazy things” — and expressed remorse over the way she treated the law enforcer: “I was so disrespectful to him. I have police officers in my family. I work with police officers every day. I know better. It’s just unacceptable.”

At one point, she even made a self-deprecating joke about the whole incident: “I played a lawyer in a movie so many times I think I am a lawyer,” Witherspoon said, referring to her work in the Legally Blonde films. “And, clearly, I’m not a lawyer because I got arrested.”

The bottom line, according to Witherspoon: “It’s just completely unacceptable and we are so sorry and embarrassed. I think we made a mistake and it was something that will absolutely never happen again…When you make a mistake, you take responsibility and we are taking responsibility and doing everything in our power to make it right.”

Phew! I’ve got to say, it’s refreshing to see a celebrity own up to bad behavior so completely and sincerely — but who’d expect anything less from Elle Woods?
