The ongoing love triangle between masked hero Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), his former girlfriend Laurel (Katie Cassidy) and Oliver’s BFF Tommy (Colin Donnell) has as many conflicted emotions as one might expect. And as Arrow cruises toward its season finale, which airs next week on the CW, look for the drama to get even more intense.
“It’s tough because I think Oliver has been the love of her life for as long as she’s known him, but Tommy, she has seen a different side to him,” says Cassidy, who once starred on Gossip Girl. “So I do think she’s hurt and she’s confused and she turns to Oliver for help…I think she’s just trying to figure it out. Do you follow your heart, do you follow your head?”
Bottom line, Cassidy believes viewers want “star-crossed lovers” Laurel and Oliver together, despite the overwhelming challenges they face. “It reminds me of Joey and Dawson from Dawson’s Creek. Everybody wanted them to be together,” she says. “I was a fan of that show, so it reminds me of that relationship because there’s just so much history between those two characters and obviously between Laurel and Oliver.”
But as Dawson fans recall, while the show initially set up a Joey (Katie Holmes) and Dawson (James Van Der Beek) romance, Joey actually ended up with Joshua Jackson’s Pacey. So does Cassidy think there’s room for a different end game? Maybe Laurel ending up with Tommy or Oliver with IT girl Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards)?
“I think anything can happen. I think that’s the beauty of television. There’s room for anything,” she says. “We’ll see what happens.”
Meanwhile tonight’s episode will add a little more context to Laurel and Oliver’s past, with some flashbacks that Cassidy says show the audience “how innocent and pure and vulnerable and raw that she is.” “It was really fun to shoot and you get a sense of the depth and warmth between these two people,” she says.
