Disney’s Planes doesn’t soar onto the silver screen until August 9th, but armchair aviators of all ages can hop into the cockpit a few days prior in the forthcoming game based on the film. Like the movie, Disney’s Planes video game takes fans on a high-flying adventure set above the same world inhabited by the likes of Lightning McQueen and Mater. Unlike most movie-tied titles, however, Planes doesn’t rehash the film’s story, but rather unravels a fresh yarn inspired by it.

Controlling the movie’s cloud-parting cast — voiced in-game by Dane Cook, Anthony Edwards, Val Kilmer, and Priyanka Chopra — players will tackle objective-based missions and participate in seat-of-the-pants races. After breaking the film-to-game curse with previous entries based on Toy Story 3, Brave, and Cars 2, we’re hopeful Disney Interactive will deliver another fun-for-the-whole-family romp worth gathering on the couch for. For a sneak peek at the game, which lands exclusively on Nintendo’s Wii, Wii U, 3DS, and DS August 6, chart a course to the trailer below.
