The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a sequel to a reboot of a franchise based on a five-decade-old comic book. As a result, it can be difficult to talk about major story points in the movie.
Some of us spent our childhoods reading back issues of Spider-Man. Some people spent their childhoods doing other things – playing sports, watching American Gladiators, fencing, just generally doing everything besides reading back issues of Spider-Man. As a result, I feel it’s necessary to preface this post with a SPOILER WARNING, although it’s also mandatory to point out that this is technically a 40-YEAR-OLD SPOILER WARNING. See, if you’re anyone who has any knowledge of Spider-Man lore, this news is just too intriguing to pass up:
New pictures of Emma Stone on the set of Amazing 2 have surfaced, and the outfit she’s wearing might just indicate a major, major plot turn in the movie. First of all, here’s the full shot of Stone as Gwen Stacy:
Light bluish-green jacket, purple skirt, black boots … hmmm, I think I’ve seen Gwen Stacy wear this before:
Yes, it would appear that Movie Gwen Stacy is wearing the exact same outfit that Comic Gwen Stacy wore in Amazing Spider-Man #121, also known as “The Night Gwen Stacy Died” – which, as the title indicates, features the death of Peter Parker’s then-girlfriend.
Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean Movie Gwen Stacy is getting offed in the sequel. For one thing, although Chris Cooper has been cast as Norman Osborn/The Green Goblin/Willem Dafoe – the villain who killed Gwen Stacy, unless you’re one of those people who blames the webbing – the main Big Bad of the movie appears to be Jamie Foxx’s Electro. They could be saving Stacy’s death for a trilogy-capping Amazing 3. The outfit could just be a nice bit of fan service from the costume department. Maybe we’ll get to see Shailene Woodley’s go-go dance?
