Jake’s future was left somewhat uncertain at the end of Scandal‘s second season, but here’s a good sign he’ll eventually get out of The Hole of Doom. EW has learned that Scott Foley has been promoted to a series regular for the show’s upcoming third season. He had been a recurring guest star.

“I’m thrilled to join such a talented, enthusiastic and professional group of people,” Foley said in a statement. “Shonda and company have created a troupe of layered complex characters and to be able to be part of that is both exciting and humbling.”

At the end of the ABC show’s second season, Foley’s character Jake was tossed into a torture pit (the same one that broke Gladiator Huck back in his CIA days), leaving us to wonder if and/or when he’d ever be released.

Scandal will return to Thursdays on ABC this fall.
