For those of you who’ve been keeping last year’s excellent Fiona Apple album The Idler Wheel.. in regular rotation but have been wondering where she went, we’ve got good news for you: she’s back with a brand new video, directed by her ex-boyf/master of The Master, Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood etc. Paul Thomas Anderson.

Like the music itself, the “Hot Knife” video is stripped-down and intensely intimate, cutting from black-and-white closeups of her face (and her cabaret-sister Maude Maggart, who provides harmonies) to mesmerizing shots of Fiona bathed in a lush filter.

Anderson may now be romantically involved — and busily building a small child army — with actress Maya Rudolph, but he and Apple are longtime collaborators professionally as well as personally; this is their fifth* music video together, joining the likes of “Paper Bag,” “Limp,” “Across the Universe,” and “Fast as You Can.”
