In Elysium, the new movie from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp, South African actor Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A Team) plays a psychopathic mercenary killer named Kruger who is on the hunt to take out Matt Damon’s character, Max. Copley, 39, loves to conduct elaborate pranks on set, and got soooo into his character that he decided to trash Damon’s trailer while Damon was away visiting his family in New York.
“Matt had had seven days off and took a red-eye flight [back to the set],” Copley says. “He’d had about three hours of sleep, and was expecting to get a little bit of rest.” He didn’t get it.
“I had made his trailer look like Kruger and his henchmen had been living in the trailer for a week,” Copley says. “There were bloodied limbs in the shower and the sink. There was blood on the sheets. I had left all my dirty clothes from the movie – my underwear, smelly socks – in his bed. There was porn in the DVD player. You know, just trash, everywhere. The poor guy walks in, exhausted, just wanting to have a lie-down, but he had to wait an hour or two while the cleaners cleaned his trailer.” So, um, did Damon find this … funny? “I don’t think he found it that funny at the time,” Copley says. (Shocker!) “But I don’t feel that sorry for him. I mean, he didn’t have to clean it himself.”
