Next month, Patrick Jane is going to be two years older.

The Mentalist will have a major time jump following Sunday’s resolution of its series-long Red John serial killer storyline. Starting with the Dec. 1 episode, the veteran CBS crime show will pick up a couple years after the CBI was dissolved in the wake of last week’s scandal revealing CBI director Gale Bertram has been part of a massive criminal conspiracy and is likely Red John himself. (So wait: Does that mean The Mentalist will now take place … in the future? Let’s pair Jane with one of Almost Human‘s robot cops!). The show previously had a six-month jump right before the fourth season finale, when Jane faked his breakdown and ran off to Las Vegas.

Creator Bruno Heller confirmed the time-jump to USA Today in a story posted this afternoon (warning: the context of his comments are pretty spoilery regarding Sunday’s episode). After Sunday’s hour, EW will post a Q&A with Heller and star Simon Baker, and we’ll post our take on this pivotal episode too.
