Tonight’s How I Met Your Mother was about honesty and trust and all that stuff Lily and Marshall are usually really good at, but are not currently thriving.
You see, Robin was getting increasingly fed up with Barney lying to her for the sake of getting a reaction out of her. One of the last straws was when he pretended to call off the wedding just so he could turn her frown upside down with a suitcase of puppies. (Aww, puppies.) Sweet as the gestures were intended to be, it was just too much. So she said no more surprises.
Barney took this to mean that Robin was secretly planning a huge surprise for him – a laser tag-themed rehearsal dinner. So he spent the entire episode begging his bride to give up the act while handcuffed in a security guard’s office. (He had been apprehended by the guard while searching for the truth about Robin’s plan…or so he claimed.) I have to admit, because the Barney Thinks Robin is Lying gag went on so long, I thought the end would reveal Barney’s suspicions to be true. Instead, we found out it was Barney who had yet another surprise up his sleeve.
Via flashback, we were shown that Robin had initially wanted her wedding to take place in Canada. But, as you might guess, the gang quickly squashed that idea. (“Canada? Are you registered at Tim Horton’s?” – Ted) But this stayed in Barney’s mind, I assume, because when it came time to plan their rehearsal dinner, he decided to bring Canada to her.
Enter Canadian Hero Alan Thicke. And an ice-skating rink. And all her rehearsal dinner invitees on skates. And that signed picture of Wayne Gretzky. And other Canadian things/people.
Now, the big reveal scene required a certain amount of suspended disbelief. (How did Robin not see the ice-skating rink when entering the fake security guard office?) But that said, it was adorable. ”Every now and then I’m going to lie to you,” Barney admitted, but he promised only to do so when it was to bring a smile to her face. Gah! Stinson, you softy. Also, Future Husbands of the World, the bar has been set.
Meanwhile, there was a nice subplot about Lily feeling sad that Marshall had kept the news about his judgeship from her. I really loved her conversation with Ted about the whole situation, as it was an all-too-rare moment of subtlety for Lily. (She’s spent most of this season being pretty over-the-top.)
We were left wondering what’s in store for her and Marshall once he gets off the road. My guess is he’ll have a lot of apologizing to do – to Lily and to Ted, for losing his Rosetta Stone.
Best quote: ”Canada? What are you going to do, hire a regular dog sled or a stretch?” – Marshall
My personal GIF request: Ted wiping out while dressed as Liberace.
Whoa: Canada DID invent the Wonderbra.
Style Hunter: I think Robin was wearing L’Wren Scott.
