It was way back in August of last year that the BBC announced Peter Capaldi would replace Matt Smith as the star of Doctor Who — although of course the intervening five months are but the blink of an eye in life of a Time Lord and, for that matter, the life of the now half century-old British sci-fi show.

Regardless, after being glimpsed briefly in the 50th anniversary special and then introduced properly in the recent Christmas show, Capaldi finally started shooting shooting the new season of Doctor Who in Cardiff on Jan. 7. To mark the occasion, the BBC has released a photograph of Capaldi and costar Jenna Coleman at work, which you can see above. (Note: Capaldi is not wearing the Doctor’s new outfit, but the one Matt Smith’s version of the character was sporting when he regenerated.) “New job, first day, slightly nervous,” Capaldi is quoted as saying in the accompanying press release. “Just like the Doctor, I’m emerging from the TARDIS into a whole other world.”

The first episode of the new season is penned by showrunner Steven Moffat and directed by Kill List filmmaker Ben Wheatley.
