Russell Brand canceled a string of sold-out shows in the U.K. after learning his mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
The comedian made the announcement last week via Twitter, writing: “Sorry to eff you around with gigs. My mum ain’t well. Tix will be honoured or refunded.”
He addressed her illness in an episode of his video blog, saying, “My mother’s currently got breast cancer.” In the clip, he also says the health system in his home country is “being destroyed” by cutbacks:
Brand’s mother is a survivor of two previous bouts of cancer, according to The Mirror. She was diagnosed with uterine cancer, then breast cancer, when Brand was a boy.
The canceled dates were part of Brand’s Messiah Complex tour, which is scheduled to resume tonight in London.
