Given the smash success that the new Idina Menzel musical If/Then is already having (in her first Broadway outing since Wicked over 10 years ago), not to mention her headlining Disney’s most successful animated movie of all time with an Oscar-winning song to boot, it’s safe to say that Adele Dazeem will be fully put to rest. (RIP Adele Dazeem). Ms. Menzel, in the most challenging role of her career, has received raves for her performance as Elizabeth, a divorced city planner trying to carve out a new life in burgeoning NYC. In the intricate storyline, her two possible lives and outcomes are lived as either Liz or Beth — with eyeglasses shrewdly worn as a visual clue to the audience, and her choices also have a ripple effect on her colorful gallery of friends and probable love interests.
In the exclusive video below, watch Idina and the rest of the very appealing cast explain their great fortune to be a part of this new tuner by Pulitzer-winning duo Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal), who are led by director Michael Greif (including a reunion with co-star Anthony Rapp, whom Greif first directed opposite Menzel in Rent nearly 20 years ago). And, like myself, you can pick your jaw up off the floor when you realize that Tony winner LaChanze (who’s a very likely candidate for Tony #2 with her choice featured role here, along with Menzel) still looks exactly as she did in Once on This Island almost 25 years ago.
If/Then is currently playing at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com.
