Suicide Squad director David Ayer shares Joker-inspired Jared Leto photo

(DC Comics)

David Ayer’s new photo of Jared Leto as the Joker will definitely put a smile on your face.

Fans are dying to know how exactly the group of DC Comics villains and antiheroes known as the Suicide Squad will look on the big screen. They’re especially curious about Leto’s version of The Joker—not least because when Ayer posted a photo earlier this week of the film’s first table read, Leto was conspicuously absent. So, to assuage fan concerns, Ayer posted another photo of Leto.

It’s the most evocative look we’ve had yet at the Oscar winner getting into character. Though he doesn’t have any makeup on, the signature green hair is there, and the lighting casts some apropriately creepy shadows across his face. More than that, the photo is a nod to Batman and Joker fans: Leto strikes a pose nearly identical to the one the Joker does on the cover of The Killing Joke, which famously established a tragic backstory for the villain.

Ayer has posted several behind-the-scenes photos of Suicide Squad’s production so far, most notably that cast photo on Wednesday—which indicated Adam Beach and The Mindy Project’s Ike Barinholtz have joined the cast, though their roles remain unknown. The photo also confirms that Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is part of the cast, though whether he is playing Killer Croc remains to be officially confirmed.

The impressive ensemble gathered for the 2016 film also includes Will Smith, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Cara Delevingne, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, and Jay Hernandez.

Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theaters on Aug. 5, 2016.
