Back in November, Lorde told VH1 that her song “Royals” was inspired by a photo that she saw in National Geographic of now-retired Kansas City Royals third-baseman George Brett.

He was signing baseballs, surrounded by screaming fans. She fixated on his jersey and the deep blue, cursive “Royals” splashed across the front. “I really love that word,” she said. “I’m a big word fetishist… I’ll take a word and pin an idea to that. It was really cool.”

After “Royals” (the song, not the shirt) carried her all the way to a zeitgest-bottling number-one hit and a Grammy Award for Song of the Year, she finally met the man who inspired it all at her concert last night in Las Vegas. No word on what they talked about, maybe both liking the color blue?
