Pioneering Chicago footwork and juke master DJ Rashad has died.
Detroit’s DJ Godfather first tweeted the news, with police confirming the 34-year-old’s death on Saturday. Cops suspect the Teklife founder died of a drug overdose, with narcotics and drug paraphernalia allegedly found near his body. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.
DJ Rashad’s label, Hyperdub, acknowledged his passing on its Facebook page, saying: “We’re absolutely devastated by the news that DJ Rashad has passed away. It’s heartbreaking to see such a talented and great guy stopped in his tracks like that. So many people do what they do because of him. Our Condolences go out to his friends and family, keep your heads up Teklife Crew x We will really miss you.”
A Hyperdub spokesman told EW that an official statement is coming early next week, after the coroner’s report is released.
Rashad was scheduled to perform alongside DJ Godfather and DJ Spinn at the Inhale Art Expo in Detroit on Saturday. He recently completed a tour with Chance the Rapper. DJ Rashad’s We On 1 EP on Southern Belle Recordings is slated for release on Monday.
