Fox is betting on its new sitcom Mulaney. The network Tuesday ordered 10 more episodes of the show – bringing its total to 16 – from Saturday Night Live scribe and stand-up comic John Mulaney. The series, about a rising stand-up comedian (Mulaney) trying to take his career to the next level, also stars comedy legends Martin Short (who plays his boss) and Elliott Gould (his neighbor), as well as SNL alum Nasim Pedrad, Seaton Smith, and Zack Pearlman, who play his three NYC roommates.
Mulaney shoots before a live audience, something that was very important to John. “I wanted to do the type of live-audience multi-camera sitcoms that I grew up on, and I have been working in stand-up and have been performing for live audiences,” he told EW. “And obviously, SNL is on a set in front of a live audience. I was used to writing for and judging stuff by a live audience, and I love the energy of it.” He says of comparisons to another show centered on a stand-up comedian, the iconic Seinfeld: “If we are a 10th as good as they are, we will be lucky.”
