American Idol and The Celebrity Apprentice runner-up Clay Aiken has finally won something.
Aiken was declared the winner of the very close Democratic primary for a North Carolina congressional seat after a final, unofficial vote, according to the Associated Press, just one day after the accidental death of rival and second-place finisher Keith Crisco. However, campaign manager Christine Botta stated that Crisco had already decided to concede loss to Aiken on Tuesday before he tragically fell in his home on Monday. The results won’t become official until a review by the state elections board that is tentatively set for May 22.
Aiken, an openly gay man in a district populated with many socially conservative, evangelical Christians, will now face off against Republican incumbent Renee Ellmers, a 50-year-old nurse from Dunn who rode the Tea Party wave into Congress in 2010. Crisco’s funeral is scheduled for Friday.
