If the New York Rangers keep playing like they did on Saturday afternoon, Jimmy Fallon is going to be the winner of one high-profile bet.
Once the Montreal Canadiens found out they were set to play the Broadway Blueshirts in the NHL’s Eastern Conference Final, Les Habitants challenged the Tonight Show host to a friendly wager:
Fallon countered, and both sides virtually shook on the bet:
So to summarize: If the Rangers win the best-of-seven series, the Canadiens will change their @CanadiensMTL Twitter avatar to a photo of Fallon for one day. The team’s mascot, Youppi, will wear a NYR jersey and post 10 pictures of himself walking around Montreal, possibly at the bar Chez Serge, which does feature a mechanical bull. If the Habs are victorious, Fallon will wear a Canadiens jersey during one of his monologues.
We have to admit: This was a brilliant move by Montreal’s marketing team. While these sort of bets are typically placed between the mayors of each team’s city, what better way to get exposure for their team — and the sport — than engaging a dude who embodies NYC spirit… and just happens to have a popular late-night show?
But to make this truly worthwhile, the Canadiens players better actually show up for game 2. The series opened yesterday, with the Rangers pummelling the Habs, 7-2.
