Netflix is in talks with Academy Award nominees Peter Morgan and Stephen Daldry to bring a series inspired by their play The Audience to the streaming service, EW has confirmed. The royal drama will be titled The Crown.
Written by Morgan and directed by Daldry, the 2013 play starred Helen Mirren in her second turn as Queen Elizabeth II; she won an Oscar for the same role in Morgan’s 2006 film The Queen. The story focuses on the weekly audiences Queen Elizabeth II has given to prime ministers since her accession in 1952.
The Sony Pictures Television series will be produced by Andy Harries, Robert Fox, and Matthew Byam Shaw, all of whom served as producers on The Audience.
Morgan earned his Oscar nominations for adapting his play Frost/Nixon and penning the original screenplay for The Queen. Daldry received his nods for directing The Reader, The Hours, and Billy Elliot.
