John Green may be a talented writer – but his acting leaves a lot to be desired. According to John Green, anyway.
Fans will get a chance to judge for themselves when they check out the author’s cameo in The Fault in Our Stars. The scene was cut from the upcoming film, but it’ll show up as an extra on the DVD release.
Ansel Elgort, who plays Augustus Waters in TFIOS, posted the above film shot to his Instagram along with this message: “This is @johngreenwritesbooks attempting to make his acting debut. I say attempting because his scene got cut… BUT, you can see it on the DVD. (It’s a deleted scene…) Not trying to be mean. ❤ You John. #johnsel”
Fans will also be able to catch the scene – which features Green as a parent with a child who quizzes Hazel (Shailene Woodley) about her illness – as part of “The Night Before Our Stars,” an opportunity for fans to check out the film before it officially opens June 6. There’s a simulcast available for the June 5 event (at 8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT) that will feature stars Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, and Nat Wolff, as well as Green.
“My first couple attempts at the scene came off pretty poorly,” Green previously told BuzzFeed, which first reported the news about his cut cameo. “At some point, the girl playing my daughter [Sophie Guest] said, ‘Would you like some acting advice?’ I said that I would indeed. ‘Three rules,’ she said. ‘Know your lines, be on time, and don’t be nervous.’ I couldn’t ever quite get the hang of the not being nervous part, but I will long remember that girl’s sage and empathetic advice, which applies to more than just acting.”
In other Fault in Our Stars news, check out this new trailer, which contains Night Before Our Stars information as well as Woodley voiceover of the book’s very best line (subjectively, duh). The clip also contains Elgort-as-Augustus winking, if you find that sort of thing charming. (You do.)
