Actor Bob Hastings, best known for his role as Lt. Carpenter on the 1960s sitcom McHale’s Navy, has died at the age of 89.

His granddaughter, Allison Knowles, reported that Hastings died Monday at his home in Burbank, California after a lengthy battle with prostate cancer, according to the Associated Press.

The Brooklyn-born actor began his career on radio dramas at age 11. He transitioned into TV in its early years, appearing in Captain Video and His Video Rangers in 1949 and Atom Squad in 1953.

Hastings will also be remembered by his standout roles on All in the Family and General Hospital, as well as a handful of voice performances. He worked until 2010, his last role being a voice performance in Mafia II.
