This Valentine’s Day, Fifty Shades of Grey hits theaters with Dakota Johnson occupying the lead role of Anastasia Steele alongside Jamie Dornan as title character Christian Grey. The steamy S&M flick is currently in post-production, so it seems odd to recall a time without Johnson as its leading lady. But before Johnson was set in stone, there were a number of young actresses rumored to be vying for the role, including Pretty Little Liars‘ Lucy Hale.

Hale sat down with MTV News to discuss her audition (see clip below). In a word, Hale describes it as being “awkward.”

Check out the clip for yourself below:

Hale said the experience was “unlike any audition I have ever done before in my life.” Read between the lines: “Let’s just say I don’t want my grandmother watching this audition tape.” Awkwardness aside, Hale said, “I think any girl in my demographic would have loved to be a part of it.” More specifically, she was interested in the role because she wanted to do something risky and a little different.

Hale’s conclusion: “It took me out of my comfort zone.” I don’t know about you, readers, but I’m certainly curious to see the audition–but please keep it away from any nanas.
