Guillermo del Toro is a pretty busy man right now, with The Strain set to air on Sunday and Pacific Rim 2 in the works, but that won’t stop the director from taking a little time out of his day for passion projects.
In an interview with Collider, del Toro revealed that he’s planning a “small movie,” one that’s in black and white and “really, really bizarre,” before he gets to pre-production on the sure-to-be-even-bigger sequel to last summer’s blockbuster.
Really, really bizarre is par for the course for Del Toro, who’s famous for the surreal sensibility he built with films such as Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth. And he’s not about to leave the kaiju or other nightmare fuel behind, promising that this smaller project would feature something that’s become pretty much expected throughout his filmography: “There’s one great creature in it,” he said.
And though del Toro won’t reveal the title of his project, he promises that he has a cast in mind. The director would love to work with John Hurt (who played Professor Broom in the Hellboy movies) and, for the main role, an obscure actress who he thinks has great taste, though she’s only been in one feature and one short. Again, the man’s not naming names.
Whoever he works with—and whatever this smaller project is called—del Toro plans to shift gears between it and Pacific Rim 2 until shooting for the blockbuster sequel takes over at the end of 2015.
