'Hunger Games,' 'Game of Thrones' among mtvU's Fandom of the Year nominees

Forget the World Cup’s USA-Portugal-Ghana-Germany nightmare. A competition category that pits fans of Game of Thrones, Doctor WhoSherlock, Breaking Bad, and Teen Wolf against each other is a real “Group of Death”—and that’s just the TV Dramas.

After announcing the nominees for its Fandom awards last month (including everything from best ship to best new fandom), mtvU has upped the ante today to announce the contenders for the big prize: Fandom of the Year.

Culled from four categories (Movies, TV Dramas, TV Comedies, and Animation), the 32 nominees will duke it out through online voting on the network’s website. The winner will be announced during the “MTV Fan Fest” at Petco Park in San Diego on July 24 during Comic-Con. MTV and mtvU will also air a 60-minute “mtvU Fandom Awards Special” on July 27.

The nominees are:

The Hunger Games
The Hobbit
Veronica Mars
The Fault in Our Stars
Captain America: Winter Soldier
X-Men: Days of Future Past
Pacific Rim

TV Dramas
Teen Wolf
Game of Thrones
The Vampire Diaries
Doctor Who
Breaking Bad
Pretty Little Liars

TV Comedies
Parks & Recreation
New Girl
How I Met Your Mother
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Attack on Titan
Free! Iwatobi Swim Club
Adventure Time
South Park
Blood Lad
Family Guy

Voting’s up over here. And in case this competition wasn’t enough for you, mtvU’s also opened up voting for it’s “Best Fandom Forever” category, which (like all the most important things in life) happens on Tumblr. The entries in that category are big hitters: Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Doctor Who, Sherlock, and Batman.

The most relevant quote comes from a franchise not in contention: May the force be with you.
