The summer’s starting to heat up, which means its time to retreat inside to air conditioning and some good TV. Luckily, there’s a lot to consume, with Jack Bauer facing a finale on 24, a new season of Real Housewives, and the arrival of a parody version, The Hotwives of Orlando. But if you want a little more adventure, venture out to theaters for some laughs with Sex Tape or some meditation on Wish I Was Here.
Here’s this week’s pop culture schedule:
Masters of Sex, 10 p.m., Showtime
The first season of this drama about Dr. William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson’s (Lizzy Caplan) 1950s experiments on human sexuality earned five Emmy nominations. Check out season two, which promises to deliver on the first’s dramatic cred while upping the amount of, you know, sex.
24: Live Another Day, 9 - 10 p.m., Fox
Promos for the finale promise that there’s a lot coming down the line for Jack Bauer, including twists, gunfights, and the continued, inexorable forward march of time.
The Hotwives of Orlando on Hulu
Did we need a parody of the Real Housewives franchise? Who knows. But does Hotwives look hilarious? Yes. Keep an eye out for Happy Endings alum Casey Wilson as Tawny St. Johny, perhaps the trashiest dame among a heap of ridiculous characters.
The 2014 ESPYs, 9 p.m., ESPN
Drake already shows up in athletes’ locker rooms after games, so it’s only natural for him to start giving them awards.
You’re the Worst, 10:30 p.m., FX
This show is about Jimmy and Gretchen, who have a one-night stand, try to be friends with benefits, and then maybe drift into something more. Maybe it’s best to cynically pick up the first episode, then becoming slowly attached over the course of the season.
Wish I Was Here in theaters
It’s too early to tell whether Zach Braff’s Kickstarter-funded indie feature will become a critical darling. On one hand, it looks a whole lot like Garden State. On the other, it looks a whole lot like Garden State. Still, the soundtrack is impressive, and the fantastical flick might just be the cure any midsummer blues.
Sex Tape in theaters
Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz get up to no good in this raunchy comedy, which has just intensified our fear of cloud computing. What’s going to happen when everyone you know discovers those considerably less sexy Star Wars tribute videos you filmed in middle school?
The Real Housewives of New Jersey, 9 p.m., Bravo
After watching Hotwives earlier in the week, you might need a little of the real thing. And it’s Christmas in New Jersey at the beginning of season six of this Garden State franchise.
