Skye McCole Bartusiak, an actress best known for her role as Mel Gibson’s daughter in 2000’s The Patriot, died Saturday. She was 21.
The cause of death has not yet been determined, but Bartusiak’s mother told CNN that epileptic seizures her daughter had endured for most of her life had returned in the past week.
Before acting in The Patriot, Bartusiak began her film career as a 6-year-old in 1999’s The Cider House Rules. She went on to appear in multiple films, including 2001’s Don’t Say a Word, opposite Michael Douglas, and, most recently, 2012’s thriller Sick Boy. Bartusiak also did television work, playing a young Kate Austen on Lost and starring in an episodes-long arc on 24.
“The girl has lived such an amazing life,” Helen McCole Bartusiak said of her daughter in a Sunday interview with CNN.
