First Nazis, now pirates! At least one cast member from The Sound of Music is nearing a deal to star in NBC’s follow-up musical presentation, Peter Pan Live.
Christian Borle, the Tony-winning actor who played Max Dettweiler in 2013’s The Sound of Music Live! opposite Carrie Underwood, is in talks to star in NBC’s live production of Peter Pan as Smee and Mr. Darling, as first reported by Deadline. NBC could not confirm whether the deal had in fact been closed, but producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron tweeted their own welcome to Borle.
No, he wouldn’t be running around doing costume changes—the role of Mr. Darling appears in the first and last acts of the show, when the children are still at the nursery before and after their adventures in Neverland. Traditionally in some productions, the actor who plays Captain Hook also plays Mr. Darling (a symbolic manifestation of the perils of ‘growing up’). In NBC’s broadcast production, Christopher Walken will play Captain Hook, so it’s Borle who will pull double-duty as Hook’s bumbling first mate Smee.
Another bit of trivia: Borle won the 2012 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his raucous role in Broadway’s Peter and the Starcatcher, a revisionist Peter Pan origin story in which he played the pirate Black Stache, who would eventually go on to be Captain Hook.
Peter Pan Live will star Girls actress Allison Williams as the titular hero, with additional casting still to be announced. NBC will broadcast the three-hour event live on December 4.
