Joan Rivers will be laid to rest on Sunday in New York City, her hometown.
The comedy and fashion icon’s funeral will be held at the city’s Temple Emanu-El.
In a statement to EW on Thursday, Emanu-El rabbi Joshua M. Davidson said, “It is a terribly sad day for all of us. We mourn with her family, friends and all those millions to whom she brought laughter and joy.”
Rivers died on Thursday at age 81 at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital, a week after she was hospitalized after she stopped breathing during a throat surgery. In a statement announcing her mother’s death, Melissa Rivers said she and her son, Cooper, were “humbled” by the support they’ve received, and urged everyone to embrace her mother’s spirit in mourning her death.
“My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh,” she wrote. “Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.”
